An awesome day! An unforgettable event! Today was truly history-in-the-making! Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States this morning. I can honestly say that this is one of those moments in my life where I will always remember where I was, what I was doing, how I was feeling, and just the overwhelming hype of the day itself. It is sort of surreal to me still.
So, where was I when Obama was sworn in as President? I was gathered in one of the large classrooms at KCUMB, sitting alongside all of my colleagues in an all-employee meeting where everyone was invited to watch and take part in this momentous event. We have all-employee meetings at least once each quarter. Interestingly, in the 6 years I have been working at the University, I have never witnessed any meeting like this one - not even remotely close. From the opening ceremony and Obama's oath to his inaugural address and through the presentation and comments of guests, there was not so much as a whisper in the classroom. Here were 250 individuals, all from varied backgrounds and political preferences, and the room was silent and completely attuned to the images displayed on the big screen. I do not ever recall a time where I have felt the emotions that I did today. I listened to the words spoken by Obama in his address and felt a million different things. Funny how a single person can speak words that captivate and motivate millions of people. And, all I could help but think about at the end of his inaugural address was how fortunate we are. We are truly blessed to live in the country we live in, to enjoy the luxuries and blessings that we have, and to be a part of a proud people capable of so much and who can accomplish anything we want to. I felt inspired - really, truly inspired.
And, now, I am sitting here watching the televised presidential balls, and I am completely fascinated by all of it. Crazy, huh??! I just saw the President and First Lady in their first dance at the Neighborhood Ball (and, Michelle Obama's dress was fabulous, by the way...). The momentum that this day is carrying is indescribable.
It is funny how things hit us. Leyton said "Obama" this morning, and yet he doesn't understand or have a clue about any of this, right? He is only 2 years old. It is funny that he will one day read about this in history books and maybe hear his parents talk about what they remember. He may wonder what any of this was like - what people were talking about and feeling. It is funny how we can sit and wonder about what this means (and will mean) to all different people from all different backgrounds and of all different ages. So many never thought they would see this day come. And, yet, here we are. Amazing.
