Follies 2009

The annual med student dinner/dance event was this past Friday and has kept me pretty busy for the last couple of weeks.  This year's Follies was held at the Muehlebach Tower (Downtown Marriott) and featured an evening of cocktails, dinner, video skits, funny "Follies Awards," caricature artists, and a night-cap performance by Disco Dick and the Mirror Balls (this was the band's second consecutive Follies, and there is nothing that pulls the crowd to the dance floor like a cover band where the lead singer, Disco Dick, has flowing blonde hair that is blown about by a fan that sits right in front of him the entire night!)  Definitely entertaining.  We had a crowd of about 600, and the event went very well.
I tried to post a few of my favorite photos.  In preparation for the big event, I managed to learn the art of costume design by crafting my very own super-hero cape (check it out!).  The shopping cart that you see in the photo is a borrowed cart from Aldi's Grocery store - with the chain and lock box in tact!!!  If you have never shopped at an Aldi's and have not had the experience, you are missing out on one of the funnier things in life ... here is a brief description of how it works.  To use a shopping cart at Aldi's, you have to insert a quarter into a lock box on the cart and pull the chain, which is connected to an entire row of carts.  To get your 25-cent cart deposit back, you have to plug the chain back into the lock box on another cart in the chain of carts.  As much as I make fun of it, you never ever see Aldi's carts floating around in the parking lot at the grocery stores.  I guess this tactic works!
The Aldi's cart became a key prop for the event; by the end of the evening, Nicole and I managed to grab a photo in the cart .... what you cannot see is that a student thought he would be funny and take off pushing the cart through the busy dance floor with Nicole and I riding in it.  Oh my!  An interesting ride to say the very least...
